Reading Comprehension

English books: Attempt to read and concentrate on paragraphs to build up paraphrasing and summarizing skills.

Magazines and newspapers articles: These will improve your understanding of complex academic text, as IELTS Academic passages are selected from these sources. Think over, reading biographies or autobiographies, popular fiction and stories, financial and sports reports as well as agony aunt; uncle column in the local paper, e.g. Sunday DAWN, Reader's Digest or global news magazine TIME.

Scientific, Trade or Medical journals: These deals with a particular subject or profession. Remember! Test makers choose variety of texts to make IELTS test more challenging.

Using Dictionary

Focus on entries. You and I are always in such a hurry to discover the meaning of the complicated word that we forget or neglect the important features on the dictionary. This often happens by instinct. But if you are one of the keenest learners, then you must give attention to all the other parts in a similar way.

  • You should view the words in the brackets (also parentheses) next to the word you’re looking up in the dictionary.
  • You’ll notice (formal), (informal), (academic) and (slang). They are usually printed initalic type, if you use Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. It also describes the WORD ORIGIN, WORD FINDER, and CULTURE explanation.
  • These (…) words actually describe the context in which you can use the particular word. Also, they’ll give you clear sense about how and why an author selects a specific word or phrase for a piece of writing.

Smart Learning Move

Keep the required standard. While working hard for vocabulary development, it is equally important to enrich with words that actually requirement of the test or most commonly active. To write and speak fluently you should be able to express your thoughts using active vocabulary without going off-topic. To show great insight is to be fully acquainted with both accuracy and fluency.

Significant Point

Recognize formal and informal register. When you take IELTS General Test, you are supposed to write a letter in writing task. Lack of knowledge regarding formal and informal register may cause your letter go down the drain, so you must have proper recognition of these registers. The analysis will assist you to evaluate the tone of the letter whether it’s in formal or informal . . .
