About The Union Pakistan

• For over 100 years, the Internal Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) has been working to advance solutions to the most pressing public health challenges facing people in poverty around the world. We began as an alliance of experts working to cure tuberculosis and have since extended our remit to related public health challenges with a focus on serving low- and middle-income populations. Tobacco use is a leading risk factor for chronic lung diseases, as well as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes; tobacco control is therefore vital to The Union's mission and the Department of Tobacco Control is one of four key technical departments within The Union.

  The Union is a global membership, technical and scientific organisation, led by people who are committed to our vision, mission and values. We are made up of government and non-government agencies, charities, donors and funders, professional groups, patient groups and civil society organisations. We bring together clinicians, managers, policy makers, front-line workers and implementers, scientists, patients and survivors, advocates, and civil society.

  In Pakistan, The Union has been working on tobacco control since 2008 with a primary focus on strengthening policy and legislation based on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and WHO’s MPOWER strategies. Presently, The Union is providing technical support to the federal and provincial governments as well as non-governmental organizations on establishing sustainable tobacco free policies, and implementation and enforcement mechanism infrastructures.
