Job Description

Operation and maintenance management:

Design for operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms
The context of the project is the development of offshore wind farms. Statoil is using their experience from large scale offshore projects in the design, construction and operations of several offshore wind farms (Statoil, 2014b). They also involved in the Hywind research project which features the world’s first full-scale floating wind turbine (Statoil, 2014c).

The focus for the project is to analyze the future wind farm production facilities with respect operations and maintenance management needs. You should use the wind farm as acontext and through examples in your answers.

You may use different examples throughout the project. It is recommended that you choose to analyze part of the installation/ system/ sub-system you and your partners have knowledge about and feel comfortable with.

Tasks
1. Briefly describe the production facilities development and focus on the functionalneeds and the future operations and maintenance management of theseassets in the various life cycle phases.

2. Identify and discuss briefly the many challenges the company will face in theoperations and maintenance management of the asset. Try to think in a broad prospective, for example project management, design out/ design for maintenance, HSE, LCC, etc. It may be helpful to study challenges in various life cycle phases such as concept, design, construction, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance, as well as the recycling phase.

3. Among the challenges identified in task 2, rank the top 5 most critical
operations and maintenance challenges. Discuss why these challenges are considered to be critical. Think in a broad perspective, e.g. project management, design out/ for maintenance, failures, performance, HSE, LCC, etc.

Discuss various alternative solutions to overcome the top 5 challenges.

Select some technical system components and analyze their failure modes effectsand criticality, failure causes, and failure consequences. Outline possible alternatives for eliminating/ reducing/ mitigating the risks.

Discuss how to use a LCC analysis to compare selection of components/equipment/ machines/ systems from different suppliers. Identify the major costs and potential loss factors and suggest which factors to include in the LCC analysis and discuss how you would assess the uncertainty in the numbers and in the results. Also consult the NORSOK standard O-CR-002 Life cycle cost for production facility (Rev. 1, April 1996)

Discuss how you will manage spare parts logistics and inventory. What are the issues involved in deciding which parts to buy, how to store the parts, where to store them, etc.?

Discuss the usage and management of data and information in an operations and maintenance management perspective. What kind of technology would yourecommend implemented for the information and communication management? Why?

9. Based on the discussion above, establish the main O&M goal(s) and discuss how you will set up a structured maintenance management program to achieve yourgoals and for improving your maintenance activities.

Demonstrate analysis tools such as FMECA, FTA, ETA, LCC, etc., as well as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Risk Based Maintenance (RBM), Risk Based Inspection (RBI) methodologies (how they are used through examples). The work should be guided by national (e.g. NORSOK standards) and international standards, governmental regulations, etc. Provide arguments to support why and how excellent operations and maintenance management can generate value and reduce risks.
