1. Operate high pressure boilers, including starting and shutting down.
2. Monitor boiler operations and react to varying load requirements.
3. Perform constant visual checks, read gauges, and manipulate controls.
4. Assure that various meter readings of pressure and temperature are recorded.
5. Inspect boiler pipes, valves, pumps, and safety devices for leaks and malfunctions.
6. Periodically inspect and adjust control mechanisms.
7. Blow down boiler when conductive solids and impurities exceed specified limits; test high and low pressure safety controls.
8. Schedule and supervise cleaning of equipment and work areas.
9. Supervise and assist in minor equipment repairs.
10. May supervise daily maintenance on boilers including oil and greasing of stokers, fans, motors, and other operating mechanisms.
11. Observe fire and safety precautions.
12. May be responsible for chemical makeup of water, testing of water qualities, and checking viscosity of oil, including:
    1. adding chemicals to condition boiler water.
    2. maintaining a chemical balance in boiler water according to prescribed procedures.
    3. performing conductivity, alkalinity, phosphate, silica, sulphate, and other hardness tests.
    4. adding chemicals to boilers needed to maintain a good chemical balance.
13. Prepare and maintain records on treatment, oil, gas chemicals consumption, and steam and hot water production.
14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

1. 1st or 2nd class boiler Attendant Certificate.
2. 2 or more years of experience in work related to the operation of high or low pressure boilers, or requiring heating, mechanical or plumbing skills.
3. Mechanical aptitude.
4. Knowledge and ability to operate and maintain high pressure boilers.
5. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy lifting.
