Job Description
SFU is seeking a Web Developer who is inspired to innovate for lasting change on media and technology issues. This work includes designing and implementing inventive Web applications, maintaining existing Web projects and integrating with technology partners.
Working in a fast-paced environment, the selected Web Developer will configure sites built primarily with the CMS; program modules and implement other custom Web applications; and develop and troubleshoot other PHP/MySQL based applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Writing code in one or more programming or scripting languages, such as PHP, .Net or JavaScript etc; PHP is mandatory.
- Planning and prototyping new applications;
- Designing the architecture of the components of an application;
- Deciding on the best technologies and languages for the project;
- Testing sites and applications in different browsers and environments;
- Problem solving;
- Fixing bugs in existing projects;
- Testing new features thoroughly to ensure they perform the correct task in all cases;
- Running performance benchmarking tests;
- Reviewing colleagues' code;
- Building and testing Application Program Interfaces (APIs) for applications to exchange data;
- Researching, incorporating and contributing to Open Source projects;
- Basic knowledge of SEO process;
- Meeting designers, developers and project staff for progress updates;
- Gathering requirements from clients and users;
- Learning and testing new technologies, frameworks and languages;
- Staying up to date with new trends and advancements in web development;
- Building and maintaining databases;
- Refactoring and optimizing existing code;
- Documenting code so other developers can understand and contribute to it;
- Designing information architecture within an application or website
- Good understanding of complete life cycle of a software project
SKILL SET:
Web developer need to demonstrate a range of technical knowledge in areas such as client-side components, server-side languages, web application frameworks and database management systems, as well as experience with version control systems, and a thorough understanding of the architecture of web applications and web security and encryption.
- Deep knowledge of .Net, PHP, SQL, HTML5, AJAX, JavaScript, CSS3, OOP
- Experience in building functional user interfaces, web front end design, as well as back-end server-side programming
- Experience building end to end implementation of web applications/websites
- Comfort with writing complex SQL queries to retrieve and manipulate data sets with PHP
- Knowledge of database design, optimization techniques, maintenance, and warehousing
- Familiarity or Experience with MVC or object oriented PHP frameworks (e.g. Codeignitor, Laravel, CakePHP, Zend)
- Knowledge of source control
- Competence in designing the objects and relationships of a full web-based (sub) system as well as programming such a system
- Bash / Shell scripting exposure
- Experience with VBA/VBScript a plus

Job Specification
Ideal candidate should be Bachelor/Master in Computer Sciences with sufficient related certifications. Prior experience in web development and/or web designing in a software house is an added advantage. Minimum one to two year progressive experience in a similar position is required.
