Food at Weddings
Now, i know most of you might be thinking, what in the world is that. But, i really wanted to take some time and discuss this issue for quite some time now. And even my mom wanted me to write an article on this "issue" . Today, i am not discussing anything related to art in any sort. I am going to discuss my opinion, on the wastage of food at weddings. Be it, Western, Eastern or any type of wedding. We can not deny the fact about, how much food is wasted at a wedding or gatherings like these.
Let's start from the begging, about why i am really writing this today. A few days earlier, i attended my sister's, friend's wedding. The wedding was amazing. Everything was on point from the bride's dress, to the decoration which was in black and white theme as those were the bride's favourite colours, and Oh.! might i add, her wedding day was celebrated on the same day as her cousin's reception ( who got married a day earlier) , and in the same place in the same hall.
Now, when the bride came, after an hour the food was served. It was a buffet system. That is how it is at most of the weddings here. But for the starters there were, two plates of samosas (which had 10-12 samosas on each plate) placed on each and every table, and trust me there were more than 20 tables consisting of 8 seats.
Fast forward.. After a while of talking etcetera, we had a few samosas which were really good,. Then the dinner was served around 9:30 pm. We all had our fill, and we filled our plates with food that, we knew we could finish off. Because, that is the thing people at weddings fill their plates with so much food that, it is all left behind. They don't care that, it is not a civil thing leaving food behind, for the dumpster to eat up and nothing else.
After dinner, we were sitting at our table talking, taking pictures. Having fun, discussing how good the food was, when suddenly a waiter came and started clearing our table. Now, this is the main part. The waiter brought a tray and dumped all the plates on that, then in the end, the samosas that were left (shown in the picture above) he dumped those on top of the dirty plates with the leftovers. I was shocked.! I couldn't belive my eyes. They dumped the perfectly good food that no-one had touched, in the leftovers, ready to be thrown away. My mother and sister had the same look on their faces as, i did. We were upset. I mean yes, i did know that they throw away the leftovers, but i did not know they actually threw away perfectly fine food that, they could give away to the poor. There are poor Afghan boys who come to collect the dump from the dumpsters, they could give it to them.! But, no our people are unearthly. I was horrified and sad to watch them throw away all the samosas and left over food. Don't they know there are people who find it impossible to find food to eat, even one meal a day. All-though i do not blame the waiters, it's their owner's fault. They should take this matter seriously, and think about how much food they are actually wasting that could feed more than 10 people at least.
If i ever get to organize a function like this, i would at least make sure that the food leftovers do not go in a bin or a dumpster. Food, that is difficult to find and eat. Food, that our parents work hard for, so that, we get to have countless meals a day.
Wastage of food, is an important affair. Not only in my country, not only in India, not only in Africa, but, every corner, every quarter, every region of this world. We need to take some serious action against this. If by being the future of this country, this world, we as humans do not take care of this issue. Trust me no-one will and in the end one day, we will become so hungry that we will start eating each other. Hunger does not have an end, it does not have a beginning but, we can finish the wastage of food, which in a way will help feed the poor. It does not have to be an issue, which will forever stay unsolved, we can solve it better than a math problem. It's not even rocket science, we just need to take a considerate step towards it. There are many ways through which we can end wastage of good food!.
I know most people, find this topic boring, discussed many times, there is no outcome. Nothing is going to happen. No-one cares. Yes.! That is true, i cannot deny those accusations. But, just one step, just by taking one small step we can stop this. Because isn't the food that is going to be fed to the dumpster better off in a hungry humans stomach.
I'd like to end my article by writing a Zimbabwean Proverb : " You cannot tell a hungry child that, you gave him food yesterday.. "
