“Did you notice Sara has made an impression on the new English teacher?” Such is our impression of the word “impression”. To be honest, it’s not that bad. In fact, isn’t it an accomplishment to at least use an English word in conversation with your friends at sixth grade in school? It’s lamentable to see how our so-called education system is limiting the meaning of words.
So, not to be detracted, the word impression has far more connotations than that. Although the word “Impressionism” is derived from the word “impression”, I would still recommend you know something about “Impressionism” before you use the word “Impression” again.
One should see impressionist paintings by Monet and Degas; One should read impressionist writing of Joseph Conrad; One should know that the world-famous classic Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen was initially intended to be called “First Impressions”.
Speaking of first impressions, I think it useful to undertake the question whether “First Impressions are the last impressions or not?” It would be far easy to say they aren’t as it is always easy to contradict. (P.S: Don’t you think I don’t) I don’t hold a single opinion here. It differs from time to time like a lot of things do (if not all of them). Kindly let me know what are your views on this.
