The area of Tschappina, stretching from the Glass Pass to the Safien Valley and then to the immediate vicinity of Safien Platz, has been settled by Walser people since the 14th century.

The Beverin Nature Park, covering 412 square kilometers, includes eleven diverse communities of historical, cultural and linguistic importance. This majestic, serene and tranquil park of natural beauty is home to four valleys and two cultures with 3000 inhabitants in its communities. The park features intact townscapes, deep gorges, crystal mountain lakes, ibexes. Its cultural heritage is influenced by two cultures, The Walser and the Romansh. The municipalities of Tschappina, Safiental, and Sufers belong to the culture of German-speaking Walser people who originally came from the Upper Valais in the 14th century. The municipalities of Val Schons and the Val Ferrera belong to the Romansh culture. Viamala Gorge, its mystical cliffs, the northern entrance of the park, intimidating historical bridges, the Church of St. Martin in Zillis referred to as “Sixtina of the Alps, the Roffla Gorge, Upper Rhine Valley, The Grand Canyon of the Alps, lake in Sufers, Safiental that is one of the most pristine regions, and Glasspass are some of the attractions of the park. The name Viamala was a warning sign that read ‘veias malas’ meaning evil road. Rare cultural sites of the Val Schons encompass the valley’s history. The church of St. Martin has unique wooden ceilings painted in the 12th century and is one of the most important cultural sites in the park.
